Inside SOP 30: building your first measurement assurance program
This month's control-chart series described the instruments; SOP 30 is the score. A process measurement assurance program (PMAP) is the management structure that turns scattered check-standard charts into a laboratory-wide claim: our results are in control, continuously, and here is the evidence.
SOP 30's program elements are concrete: select the critical measurement processes; assign each a check standard and a charting procedure (SOPs 9, 17, 20 as appropriate); define review responsibilities and out-of-control responses; and connect the accumulated statistics back into the uncertainty budgets they validate. GLP 1 frames the same obligations at the quality-system level.
The payoff compounds. Auditors get evidence instead of assertions — ISO/IEC 17025's §7.7 'monitoring validity of results' is essentially a PMAP requirement in miniature. Out-of-tolerance surprises at external calibration become rare, because drift announced itself on a chart months earlier. And when a customer asks the hard question — 'why should I believe this number?' — the answer is a film, not a snapshot.
