Accreditation
Third-party attestation, by an authoritative body, of a conformity assessment body's competence to carry out specific tasks — for laboratories, against ISO/IEC 17025, by bodies operating under ISO/IEC 17011.

Accuracy class
A class of instruments or systems that meet stated metrological requirements intended to keep errors or instrumental uncertainties within specified limits under specified conditions — OIML weight classes E1 through M3 are the canonical example.

Adjustment of a measuring system
The set of operations carried out on a measuring system so that it provides prescribed indications corresponding to given quantity values. Adjustment changes the instrument; calibration afterwards re-establishes its relation to standards.

Air buoyancy correction
The correction applied in precise mass comparisons for the differing volumes of the standards and the object weighed, proportional to air density and volume difference — dominant in high-accuracy mass work.

Calibration results recorded before (as-found) and after (as-left) any adjustment or repair. As-found data support reverse-traceability decisions about product accepted with the instrument since its previous calibration.

Base quantity
A quantity in a conventionally chosen subset of a system of quantities in which no member can be expressed in terms of the others.

Base unit
A measurement unit adopted by convention for a base quantity — in the SI: second, metre, kilogram, ampere, kelvin, mole, candela.

Blank indication
The indication obtained from a phenomenon, body, or substance similar to the one under investigation but for which the quantity of interest is supposed absent or not contributing — the analytical chemist's blank, generalized.

Calibration
The operation that, under specified conditions, first establishes a relation between values (with uncertainties) provided by measurement standards and corresponding indications (with uncertainties), and second uses that information to obtain results from indications. Calibration is not adjustment.

Calibration and measurement capability (CMC)
The smallest uncertainty of measurement a laboratory can achieve within its accredited scope when performing more or less routine calibrations of nearly ideal devices — the uncertainty published in its scope of accreditation.

Calibration curve
The expression of the relation between indication and corresponding measured quantity value established by calibration — the diagram's central line, without the uncertainty strip.

Calibration hierarchy

Calibration interval

Combined standard measurement uncertainty
The standard uncertainty obtained from the individual standard uncertainties (and covariances) of the input quantities through the measurement model — root-sum-of-squares in the uncorrelated case, denoted u꜀.

Commutability of a reference material
The property demonstrated by the closeness of agreement between the relation among results for a stated quantity in the RM and the relation among results for representative routine samples, across specified procedures — whether the RM behaves like the real thing.

A quantity value attributed to a quantity by agreement for a given purpose — the conventional value of local gravity, or the conventional mass of a weight.

Conversion factor between units

A measuring system with the means to move a probing system and determine spatial coordinates on a workpiece surface; acceptance and reverification tests are specified in the ISO 10360 series.

Compensation for an estimated systematic effect, applied additively or multiplicatively. The uncertainty of the correction itself must enter the budget.

Coverage factor
The number k by which a combined standard uncertainty is multiplied to obtain an expanded uncertainty; k = 2 is standard certificate practice, with a t-based k when effective degrees of freedom are small.

The interval containing the set of true quantity values of a measurand with a stated probability, based on available information — unlike a classical confidence interval, not necessarily centred on the measured value.

Dead band
The maximum interval through which the value of the quantity being measured can be changed in both directions without producing a detectable change in indication — hysteresis's operational signature.

Deadweight tester
A pressure standard in which known masses acting on a piston of known effective area generate reference pressures — the primary realization of pressure in many calibration laboratories.

Decision rule
A documented rule describing how measurement uncertainty is accounted for when stating conformity with a specified requirement — required by ISO/IEC 17025:2017 when a laboratory reports pass/fail.

Definitional uncertainty
The component of uncertainty resulting from the finite detail in the definition of the measurand itself — the floor below which no better procedure can go without redefining the quantity.

Derived quantity
A quantity in a system of quantities defined in terms of the base quantities of that system — speed, force, pressure.

Derived unit

Detection limit
The measured value, obtained by a given procedure, for which the probability of falsely claiming absence of a component is β, given a probability α of falsely claiming its presence — the statistically honest "smallest amount we can claim to see".

Detector
A device or substance that indicates the presence of a phenomenon, body, or substance when a threshold of an associated quantity is exceeded — presence, not magnitude.

Discrimination threshold
The largest change in the value of the quantity being measured that causes no detectable change in the corresponding indication — stickiness quantified.

Expanded measurement uncertainty
The product of a combined standard uncertainty and a coverage factor greater than one: U = k·u꜀. With k = 2 the coverage probability is about 95 % for a normal distribution.

A measurement systems analysis estimating the variation due to the gauge (repeatability) and the operators (reproducibility), commonly expressed as a percentage of total variation or tolerance.

Gauge block
An end standard of length with flat, parallel measuring faces of known separation, wrung into stacks to realize lengths — grades and requirements per ISO 3650.

Guard band
An interval applied between the tolerance limit and the acceptance limit to control the risk of false accept or false reject given measurement uncertainty — commonly the expanded uncertainty U, per ILAC-G8.

The International Temperature Scale of 1990: defined fixed points (e.g. the triple point of water, 273.16 K) and specified interpolation instruments through which practical temperature measurement is realized worldwide.

Limiting operating condition
An extreme operating condition an instrument is required to withstand without damage and without degrading specified properties when subsequently operated under rated conditions — survival limits, not working limits.

Material measure
A device reproducing or supplying, in a permanent manner during its use, quantities of given values — gauge blocks, standard weights, volumetric flasks, standard resistors.

The extreme value of measurement error, with respect to a known reference value, permitted by specifications or regulations for a given instrument. Verification confirms indications fall within ±MPE.

The quantity intended to be measured. Specifying a measurand requires the kind of quantity and a description of the state of the phenomenon, body, or substance carrying it.

Nominal indication interval
The set of values, bounded by rounded or approximate extreme indications, obtainable with a particular setting of the controls and used to designate that setting — the "0–100 V range" on a meter switch.

Nominal property
A property of a phenomenon, body, or substance that has no magnitude — the sex of a specimen, the color sequence of a resistor, an ISO country code. It can be examined and classified, but not measured.

A rounded or approximate value of a characterizing quantity of a measuring instrument that guides its appropriate use — the "100 Ω" stamped on a resistor, the "1 kg" of a weight.

Normalized error (En)
The interlaboratory comparison statistic En = (x − X) / √(U²(x) + U²(X)). |En| ≤ 1 indicates agreement within expanded uncertainties; it is the standard scoring for calibration proficiency tests.
