Inside GMP 12: choosing the right procedure is a metrological decision
With a library of sixty procedures, the quiet question is: which one? NIST's GMP 12 exists for exactly that — selecting and applying the appropriate SOP for a given calibration, and documenting the choice.
The selection logic runs on echelon and tolerance: what class of standard is being calibrated, against what, to what uncertainty target? The substitution family alone (SOPs 4, 7, 8, and the advanced designs of 28 and 5) spans an order of magnitude in effort; picking the heavyweight design for M-class work wastes bench time, while picking the shortcut for E-class work quietly fails the customer.
