Time explainer: what a stopwatch calibration actually verifies

A stopwatch calibration sounds trivial — time is, after all, the best-realized unit in the SI. The subtlety is that a stopwatch measurement includes the human, and SOP 24 in the library is careful about which part of the system each method actually tests.

The direct-comparison method races the stopwatch against a traceable time display and includes the operator's start/stop reaction in the result — appropriate when the watch is USED that way, since reaction time (tens of milliseconds, largely canceling between start and stop for a steady operator) is part of the real measurement process. The totalize method gates the watch's own oscillator against a frequency standard and removes the human, testing the instrument alone.

Which method a certificate used decides what its numbers mean for your application — timing a 30-second process versus qualifying the watch's crystal.
