Inside SOP 8: modified substitution — when good enough is exactly right
Not every weighing deserves the full double-substitution ceremony. NIST's SOP 8 documents modified substitution: the standard and unknown are each read once against the balance's digital indication, without the sensitivity-weight bracket of SOP 4.
The trade is explicit. Modified substitution leans on the balance's own span calibration between the two readings, so it inherits an uncertainty contribution that the full design cancels. In exchange it is fast — which matters when a cart of working weights needs verification against tolerances that are generous relative to the balance's performance.
The procedure's value is the boundary it draws: it states when the shortcut is metrologically justified (echelon, tolerance, balance resolution) and when the work must escalate to SOP 4 or 7.
