Reading a balance like a metrologist: GMP 1 and turning points

Before digital balances, reading a mechanical balance meant watching the pointer swing and averaging its turning points — and NIST's GMP 1 still documents the technique, because equal-arm and single-pan mechanical balances remain in service in many standards laboratories.

The method matters because a swinging beam never quite stops: reading turning points extracts the rest point from the oscillation without waiting for damping, and does it reproducibly between operators. GMP 1 gives the averaging schemes and worked examples.

Its modern relevance is broader than antique balances. The discipline it teaches — define exactly how an indication is taken before arguing about its uncertainty — is the same discipline GMP 10 applies to the whole weighing operation: environment, handling, thermal equilibrium, and operator technique are all part of the measurement, not background noise.
